A Chusky is a hybrid type of a dog. Their breed has been established by mixing a Chow Chow and a Siberian Husky, hence the name Chusky, or Chowski, as they are sometimes referred to. This is a designed breed which gained a lot of popularity.
This is mainly because the parent breeds are already so popular so it did not take for the new breed to earn a lot of respect and praise from fans. It is a medium to big type of a dog, which is extremely loveable. They have a lot of energy that they need to exert and are recommended for experienced trainers. But the dog acts as a great family pet tough.
History & Origins
The origin of the Chusky is still pretty vague. It was only recognized as a designer bred quite recently. There is no evidence if it was accidental or if it was done on purpose. But whatever it was, the thing is that the popularity of the dog has been going up steading.
Mixing a Chow Chow with a Siberian Husky was a good idea since both the dogs are loveable and popular. You can get a dog with better healthy and all of the necessary characteristics of these two. But there are still some things that come as unpredictable for this dogs which is usual for a mixed breed or any hybrid breed in the world.
Chusky Characteristics & Temperament
A Chusky is a loveable and affectionate dog. They are lively and love running around and playing. You might not consider this because of their size but these are the trains that they earned from their parents. The Chusky loves humans and loves spending time with its family. Once it forms a bond with a person and the household, it will love it forever. They are good at being guard dogs and they also like when they are center of attention. Children will do very nicely around them.
But even though they are so loveable, it can be hard to train them. These dogs are not recommended for inexperienced trainers. It takes a real expert to train this dog properly as they tend to be aloof and stubborn if not handle correctly. You also need to manage their high energy output as well. But if you still want to train them, try proving them with early socialization. Exercising is important for them so take them on walks, play with them, and allow them to run around.
Appearance, Colors, Size
A Chusky is a middle-sized to a big-sized dog. It actually has all of the appearance characteristics of its parent breeds and mainly looks like a mix between a Husky and a Chow Chow, which it is. They usually grow up to be somewhere 18 to 23 inches in size and weight about 40 to 65 pounds.
When it comes to their coats, the Chusky will inherit it form its parents. It will either look like one or the other, you rarely can get a mixture of the two. They have a double coat, which is soft and thick. Color options almost always come in white and creams the reddish gold color, black with light red markings. But due to their thick coats, the Chusky does not tolerate heat so much. So either keep him inside when it’s hot or try to get this dog in more favorable climate conditions.
The Chusky is a healthier dog compared to both of its parent breeds. This is sometimes the purpose for making hybrid breeds in the first place. The average lifespan of this dog is somewhere between 10 and 13 years and it seems really good for this type of a dog. When it comes to health issues, they mostly inherit all the problems genetically from their parents.
You should watch out for conditions such as eye problems and dental problmes, But one of the most common things with a Chusky is that they often tend to come out without front teeth when they are little. But they will grow out eventually, but you just need to determine their feeding plan in the meantime.
Grooming & Shedding
A Chusky is a heavy shedding dog. This may put you off from owning one, but the fact still is that these dogs shed all year round. Due to the characteristics of their coats and hair you will have to vacuum after them and pick their hair. During the heavy shedding periods their hair might even come off in cloves. When it comes to maintenance, you will need to brush their coats on a daily basis, especially during the heavy shedding periods. You can even clip their hair during hot months since they are really intolerant to heat. Other types of grooming includes clipping their nails and taking care of their teeth and eyes. This will help avoid some health problems which you do not want affecting your dog.
Price and Breeders
The Chusky is gaining on popularity and there are a lot of breeders who make them. The trouble would be finding a quality one but if you search well enough you will manage to find then. But the price for a single dog ranges from 200 to 800 dollars, depending on the breeder and the stock.
One of the more popular groups that allows you to rescue a Chusky is the AKC Canine Good Citizen.
