History & Origins

The Miniature Schnauzer originates from Germany and it first appeared in the 19th century. The standard Schnauzer were first developed as medium sized dogs and were used as farm dogs. They were good at hearding, ratting and also guarding property. But as time went, farmers decided that they were in need of smaller sized dogs and they saw a potential in this dog becoming a great ratting dog.

They used the standard schnauzer and combined it with Affenpinscher and Miniature Poodle and the result is a Miniature Schnauzer that we have today. This breed is also highly popular nowadays and ranks very high among the all dogs particularly in America.

The Miniature Schnauzer is mostly described as an intelligent, friendly and alert dog. They are very spirited and energetic but are also very obedient towards the owner. These dogs are great watch dogs and have a high territorial instinct, but they will first bark and are not inclined to barking. A Miniature Schnauzer has a very characteristic build and appearance. They mostly grow up to be 12 to 14 inches in size and will weigh 10 to 15 pounds for females or 11 to 18 pounds for male dogs. Their coat consist of a double coat with exterior fur and a very soft undercoat. The fur on the body is supposed to be short while their fur on their legs, belly and face is longer.

What makes the dog very much characteristic is its square shaped body and long moustache like hair on its face. There are three recognized colors, black, salt and pepper and black and silver. There are also pure white miniature Schnauzers but this is not a recognized nor an official color for these dogs.

The Miniature Schnauzer is generally speaking a healthy breed, but can have problems with high fat levels. Nevertheless, the can live up approximately to 12 years, while some can even reach a lifespan of 15 years if cared for properly. The most common health conditions that the breed suffers from include  hyperlipidemia, increasing the possibility of  pancreatitis,  diabetes, bladder stones and eye problems. It is advised to feel the dog low fatty foods which will prevent its fat problems and allow it to be healthier.

A Miniature Schnauzer is a low shedding dog. Actually it is almost non-existent and unnoticeable. But the dog is actually pretty high demanding when it comes to grooming it.
